Important Update on Baylor Scott & White
for the 2024-25 Plan Year

After considerable evaluation, TRS and Baylor Scott & White (BSW) Health Plan have mutually decided not to renew BSW’s Health Plan contract at the end of the current 2023-24 plan year, Aug. 31, 2024. The BSW Health Plan is a fully insured HMO product offered under the TRS-ActiveCare umbrella for districts located in North and Central Texas.

As such, this HMO product will not be offered as a plan option for the upcoming 2024-25 plan year, beginning Sept. 1, 2024.

Please note that BSW medical facilities and doctors are still in-network with Blue Cross & Blue Shield Texas (BCBSTX). This only means that the BSW Health Plan insurance option will no longer be available for the next plan year.

What’s Next

Our goal is to make the transition as simple as possible. TRS-ActiveCare has an array of plans for employees to choose from depending on their health care needs. Nearly all BSW Health Plan providers are in-network for TRS-ActiveCare plans, including BSW’s medical facilities and physicians.

We expect most participants can continue to see their doctors. If a participant’s PCP is outside the BCBSTX network, TRS will notify the member with a letter.

Coverage Will Still Be Comprehensive

The TRS-ActiveCare Primary+ plan offers comparable coverage with a lower total premium in most tiers. For this upcoming plan year, you can review the contribution to your employees’ premiums for the TRS plans. If an employee doesn’t select a plan during Annual Enrollment, TRS will automatically enroll them in the Primary+ plan so there is no gap in coverage.

TRS and BCBSTX have also worked to develop benefits tailored to the unique needs of public school employees. Take a look at our no-extra-cost health and wellness benefits that your employees can now access on the BCBSTX website.

Important Differences

There may be some differences between the BSW prescription coverage and Express Scripts prescription coverage. Employees can look up whether their drugs are covered on the Express Scripts website for TRS-ActiveCare. If their medication will no longer be covered, the participant will receive a letter.

The TRS-ActiveCare Primary and Primary+ plans require a PCP to manage their care and give them referrals to specialists. If an employee chooses one of these plans, they’ll need to choose a PCP during Annual Enrollment, which will be July 8 – Aug. 16.
