  • Effective Dates

    • Most benefits are effective the first of the month following your actively-at-work date. Click here to view the dates benefits become effective.
    • TRS-ActiveCare gives you the option to have medical coverage effective on your actively at work date; however, you will owe the full medical premium for that month. Premium is not pro-rated for a partial month of coverage.
  • Premiums

    • Premiums are deducted in arrears. For example, premiums for September coverage are deducted from the September paycheck. Biweekly employees pay the monthly premium in two equal payroll deductions each month.
    • Biweekly paid employees… For months with three paychecks, premiums will only be deducted from the first two paychecks of that month.
    • If the timing of your benefit elections results in missed payroll deductions, any premiums owed will be deducted from the next following paycheck.
    • View your paychecks to confirm accurate benefits and premium deductions.
    • Non-benefits eligible employees (Sub and Part-time/Temporary) who elect medical coverage will self-pay the full monthly medical premium in advance of the month of coverage. Contact GISD Benefits upon enrollment for payment details.
  • Things To Note

    • You’ll receive reminders: The enrollment system will send you emails, including reminders to make elections, or to finalize elections made but not yet confirmed by your PIN signature. You will receive a confirmation email when elections are complete.
    • No elections = No coverage: If you do not make elections that you do not finalize – voluntary benefits will be considered waived until your next enrollment opportunity. Remember to designate a beneficiary for the district provided group life insurance.
    • Coming from another district? If you are coming to Garland ISD directly from another school district, please verify the end date of your prior coverage before making elections, especially if you are a summer hire and/or had TRS ActiveCare coverage with your previous school district.
    • July hire date? Employees with July hire dates enroll for two plan years. New hire elections will be effective August 1 for the current plan year and Open Enrollment elections will be effective September 1 for the following plan year.
